Supposedly this was an abbreviation of “abnormal end” but everyone knows that it is actually the German word for “evening”. This is because when the afternoon has worn away, and der ABEND ist gekommen, the system operators want to go to O'Reilly's Pub, and they ABEND your programs so you will go home.
